Ooze Love to Create Change

A couple of years ago, I had dinner with a group from work. I chose a vegetarian dish from the menu. When questioned as to the reason for my choice, I said, “I don’t eat meat.” The person became quite angry with me. He hunted and was passionate about hunting. I did not say anything against hunting, but he had projected my choosing a meatless dish as a judgment against him. If he had a dialogue with me, he would have learned that I chose vegetarian in an effort not to support the “factory” farming of animals. This projection also seems to happen when we discuss sensitive topics, like politics, with one another.

Those who have experienced the joys of God’s spirit bring His light into the world. One cannot force others to do anything that would place them in a condition to receive this spirit – even though it is the most beautiful, incredible experience on earth, and one so blessed must wish that everyone experiences it. God chooses who, when, where, and through His Grace we receive Spirit, but we have the choice of having a place in our souls ready to welcome and receive. The only way to educate is to be.

Self-mastery differs from repression. With self-mastery one is in control and choosing his or her own course of action; while with repression another is in control and through the use of force complies one to desist from a behavior.

Some attempt to legislate morality. For example, sexuality is a natural desire. Those who believe that sexuality has a specific place and in a certain relationship according to God’s commands, attempt to force others to behave as they believe through use of laws. God is love, using law to force another to adhere to a moral code only increases fear and its sister, anger.

Consensual laws maintain the rules of conduct among community members; i.e. one doesn’t steal from a neighbor or take the life of another. These are an example of what some call natural law. They help maintain the coexistence among humans. Without civil laws we would have chaos. At this stage in our development, we need laws or rules in order to get along with one another.

We live in a melting pot of a culture where there are so many differing belief systems. We cannot use laws to enforce one belief system over another. Attempting this only inflames anger, resistance, and fear.

If one wants to change others to believe in God, first one has to be the example. If one oozes God’s love and prays for others’ hearts to open, this is a more valuable use of time than fighting and debating over legislating morality.
