Sex: An Itch or A Path?

Why do we exist? Why are we here? This is a question so many have asked and continue to ask since the dawn of time. Are we merely here to exist/survive, or is there some greater purpose?
If we are here to live and propagate the next generation, we are like the insects which do the same. All living things of the earth – plants, animals, and single cell organisms – live a lifespan, reproduce and die. How are humans different?

Humans have a different level of rationality. However, we are also often unaware of our connection with the Eternal, the Creator. Each of us is born with a spark of the Divine that calls us to oneness. We are born with the spark, but we want to do things our own way. This is our battle, our struggle, desiring the oneness of Eternal Bliss, but also wanting to keep our individuality and control over our own lives. This is in part why man suffers. He has rational thought that allows him to visualize a life different and better than the one he has, while animals do not have this ability. Instead, they live in the now, while man can conceptualize a future, as well as remember the past.
Our rationality supplants instinct. We are out of harmony with the song of nature. We do not mate in cycles like some species do. We do not mate according to best times for procreation. We choose to live according to our own rules and desires – with sexuality we choose the times to mate (sometimes to the excess) and who to mate with, often without any rational thought. Mating for the human species is not just for procreation, not just for uniting and bonding, not even just for pleasure and stimulation, but may also be used as a power tactic to show dominance over a weaker physical vessel, i.e. as a weapon. Why are the strongest cuss words in many languages the act of conjoining in sexual union? In taking sex from the sacred to the profane, we have tossed God out of the co-creation of the next generation.
Mating has transformed from the means to sustain the species to “the sky’s the limit”. It has become a cultural obsession. Why? Because many in our culture seem obsessed with our bodies and what brings comfort, pleasure, and immediate gratification to them.
Sexuality is a gift. Not an itch to be scratched, but a path to the Eternal. Mating is a physical hunger of the body, similar to the hunger for nourishment, and both enjoyable. The physical union with another that you have experienced a caring, committed connection with is a symbolic gesture of union with the One, with the All. This union also has the chance of procreation, using Divine energy to bring into this world another soul in a physical body. This is a blessing from God. Aside from the physical creative aspect, intercourse brings spiritual union. It is misused when there is not a union of heart, mind, dreams, etc. first. Misuse blocks us from hearing God’s voice. Those who seek pseudo love as a substitute for God’s love are left with an ever-deepening black hole to fill in their soul.
Edgar Cayce, an American spiritual healer, explains it best according to Mark Thurston: “Cayce saw sexuality as the arena where we have the best chance to make the greatest strides in growth. This is where we can uncover the fundamental oneness of all energy. This is where we can create new life.
“Sexual expression is so powerful because it’s the movement of the creative force, the kundalini, through the spiritual centers. Sex involves exercising the highest emotions a physical body can experience; he referred to sex as ‘the highest vibrations that are experienced in the material world’.
Our sexuality is basic to who we are, and it is unavoidably involved in the challenges and growth potential of our spiritual lives.” The Essential Edgar Cayce, Edited and Introduced by Mark Thurston, Ph. D. (911-915)
When a person seeks multiple sexual encounters to gratify the ego, or seeks an encounter for control over another, or to score a point, it is not a sacred union. Gluttony of sexual appetites is the same as gluttony of food and drink. It is attachment to the body without hearkening to the soul’s call. It takes God out of the activity, out of our life at that moment of choice.
We place such an emphasis on sexuality and who is sleeping with whom. It is one of the foundational dramas of our lives. Why not place an emphasis instead on spirituality? Make God the priority. Celibacy is almost thought of as a joke in our culture, but celibacy offers a freedom. When one chooses celibacy, one chooses to be free of responsibility in order to serve all. One frees oneself from the chains of desire. Desire not exercised eventually becomes less of a temptation, and less of a focus of the mind and heart, so our focus can point elsewhere.
Whenever a thought not based on love enters your mind, pray. Do thoughts of intimacy without love make one feel closer to God? On the TV it looks like it is all fun. It looks like the participants in free sexuality are lighthearted and having a great time. It appears the norm. Appearances, especially the electronic flickering images of a television show, are not real life. Misuse of the procreative power happens in thought as well. This misuse blocks access to spirit, the spirit of the Eternal One. Access is wide open for all, but individuals put up blocks. God puts up none. If misusing the procreative power in thought or deed, blocks access to God, why would one want to continue? Is it that much more pleasurable than being one with God? Those who choose this way do not yet know the joy of the Eternal. Passion of this nature arises from hunger, emptiness. Hunger knows not trust in God. Trust in God opposes and conquers fear. Trust in God and you will know Love.
Actions spring first from thoughts, so thoughts must first align with God’s thoughts. God allows us free choice and free actions, but when we choose God, we are choosing not only the greatest joy and peace one can know, but also we are helping in the evolution of ourselves. Yes, we can continue in “free love” among bodies, but why not choose genuine bliss and the love of God first?
